Joe Root has achieved a significant milestone in Test cricket, becoming the second-highest run-scorer (13,409) of all time. This remarkable feat was accomplished during his impressive century against India at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Root, who recently surpassed Alastair Cook to become England’s all-time leading run-scorer in October, has now overtaken three more cricketing legends.
As of this historic inning, he stands second only to Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the top position with 15,921 Test runs.
During the third day of the match, Root resumed his innings at 11 runs. He moved past Rahul Dravid’s tally (13,288) when he reached 30 with a shot to deep third, and then overtook Jacques Kallis (13,289) with a single to cover.
His run-scoring streak continued, as a single off Anshul Kamboj’s delivery took him past Ricky Ponting’s mark (13,378), bringing him to a score of 120.
Ponting, who was present at the ground commentating for Sky Sports, had the honor of witnessing Root overtake him in real-time.
He praised Root’s consistent pursuit of runs and congratulated him on the remarkable achievement.
“Congratulations, Joe Root. Magnificent,” Ponting remarked. “A stunning achievement to reach second on the all-time list, with 120 not out. The crowd at Old Trafford is thoroughly appreciative. Root has been in exceptional form in recent years, and given his continued success, there’s no reason why he can’t close the gap to Tendulkar.”
With Root’s continued form and dedication, it’s possible that he could further challenge Tendulkar’s long-standing record in the years ahead. Cricket fans are eager to see how his career unfolds as he aims to break even more records.
